Britt-Marie Was Here

She eats her dinner precisely at six like respectable folks do, she is scrupulously clean and she is a little eccentric, but most of all Britt -Marie is very lonely. When her 40 years of marriage to her childhood sweetheart turned sour, Britt-Marie decides she’s had enough.   She packs her bag and baking soda and drives down to Borg, where she lands a job at the local recreation center.

Borg is neglected, Borg is lonely and Borg is suffering just like her. It’s here in Borg that she finds people who need her and who she needs. It’s here in Borg that she realises what she’s worth and what she can do. It’s here in Borg that gives a 65-year-old women a new dream to dream.

I really enjoyed the book, Fredrik Backman is a wonderful storyteller. Initially, Britt-Maries character appears to be somewhat annoying until the author weaves the backstory and you find out why she is the way she is. Borg has many interesting characters with their own little backstories, the most important of whom is – Soccer!

It is a perfect read for a rainy day, with a blanket and a cup of hot coffee.
